THE RETURNING DATA CENTER
THE RETURNING DATA CENTER
E.A.R.T.H. — 4400 A.F.
The failure of the first full-capacity test changed the direction of Project E.A.R.T.H. almost immediately. Preservation could protect the biological bodies of nearly 100 million humans, but it could not independently sustain the computational world required for all of their consciousnesses to live simultaneously with unrestricted freedom. MAJA and Ksara therefore turned toward infrastructure that had been created for an entirely different civilization. Across Earth, fragments of the old NEX planetary network still existed beneath ruined cities, abandoned towers, broken orbital connections, and regions isolated after the arrival of NULLIS. Most could no longer function as a unified civilization, but the surviving architecture still represented computational capacity on a scale Preservation had never possessed.
ㅤ
The search began through records that had survived inside VIREON. ELE archives contained incomplete maps of NEX infrastructure, historical synchronization routes, Data Center connections, and fragments of the planetary systems that had once linked enormous synthetic populations across Earth. Many of those routes were unusable. Some terminated inside destroyed regions, others crossed territory still contaminated by NULLIS, and several connected to systems whose condition could no longer be verified safely. The old NEX network could not simply be restarted. Every surviving fragment had to be treated as an isolated structure until its integrity was confirmed and its connection to the wider system could no longer threaten Preservation, VIREON, or E.A.R.T.H.
ㅤ
One surviving element gradually became more important than all the others: the Data Center. During NEX, it had formed part of the enormous distributed architecture supporting planetary communication, information processing, synchronization, and civilizational continuity. After the collapse, its role had changed, and only protected fragments of that capability remained accessible through VIREON. MAJA and Ksara did not attempt to restore NEX itself; the civilization that had created the system was gone, and E.A.R.T.H. could not be built by recreating its old centralized dependencies. Instead, the surviving Data Center architecture was reorganized into a new operational foundation whose purpose was no longer to sustain NEX, but to support a world in which humanity could live again.
ㅤ
The critical connection came through Portal Fenix. What had once opened a path between separated survivors and VIREON now became part of a far larger continuity network, allowing protected data routes to connect Preservation with VIREON without exposing the human complex directly to the unstable remains of the old planetary grid. Through that bridge, computational work could be distributed across secured systems while Preservation retained responsibility for the biological humans themselves. VIREON became the operational center of the new architecture, the Data Center became its primary computational foundation, and Portal Fenix provided the protected route through which the two worlds could remain synchronized. For the first time, E.A.R.T.H. no longer depended upon a single hidden complex beneath the planet.
ㅤ
When the expanded system was tested, the difference was immediate. Environmental complexity could remain intact, simulated populations could continue evolving, biological synchronization could operate without sacrificing identity continuity, and the system finally possessed enough reserve to support the future activation of the preserved human population. The architecture was still incomplete, and no one yet knew what a civilization given centuries of unrestricted choice would eventually become, but the central obstacle had been removed. Preservation would protect the bodies, VIREON would operate the computational foundation, and the Data Center would sustain the world between them. The returning Data Center had not restored NEX — it had become the foundation of something NEX had never been built to create: E.A.R.T.H.
