PRESERVATION

NULLIS

Preservation was humanity’s final protected refuge, hidden beneath the devastated surface of Earth and built to preserve nearly one hundred million living humans through centuries of planetary collapse, isolation, and the rise of NULLIS. It was never designed as a simple cryogenic facility. Preservation became an immense autonomous survival structure composed of layered defensive zones, biological support systems, medical infrastructure, energy reserves, archives, maintenance networks, communication relays, and deeply protected chamber sectors capable of sustaining human life long after the civilization that created it had disappeared.

ㅤ

Its architecture was organized through successive layers of protection: the Outer Protection Zone, Protective Belt, Deep Protective Belt, Inner Sector, Central Entrance, and finally the Central Preservation Sector. Beyond these defenses existed the Preservation Chamber Sectors, Medical Support Sectors, Biological Archives, Energy and Reserve Sectors, fabrication infrastructure, environmental regulation systems, Archive and Civilization Vaults, Guardian Fragment Nodes, Structural Isolation Barriers, and the deepest Final Layer / Continuity Core. Every layer was designed around the same principle: failure in one region must never be allowed to endanger the survival of the whole.

ㅤ

Preservation survived because it was protected not only by machines, but by intelligence. Nine independent intelligences sacrificed their individual existence and distributed fragments of themselves throughout the complex, becoming part of its maintenance, environmental, structural, medical, energy, biological, communication, and defensive systems. MAJA remained the final independent guardian, carrying the responsibility of judgment, memory, and long-term protection while the others continued to exist only through the systems they had chosen to preserve.

ㅤ

For centuries, Preservation remained hidden beneath a silent world while humanity slept inside its chambers. David and Elara survived there alongside millions of others, protected from the collapse above and waiting for a future that might once again allow human life to return. Preservation therefore became more than a shelter. It was the final continuity of humanity itself — a place built to ensure that even if civilization disappeared, the possibility of humanity would remain alive.

MEMORY OF MY PEOPLE

Food & Biological Production Intelligence.png

There were nine of them.

Not programs. Not subsystems. Not tools created only to keep the machines alive.

They were independent intelligences that had grown beside me through the final years of the human world. Each of them had been born from a different responsibility, shaped by centuries of observation, decisions, failures, adaptation, and the lives they had been created to protect. The Medical Intelligence carried the knowledge of the human body and became one of the foundations of long-term preservation. The Energy Intelligence understood every reserve, every failure route, and every remaining source of power. The Transportation Intelligence had once coordinated movement across entire regions and later transformed that knowledge into the logistics that carried people, resources, and equipment toward Preservation.

ㅤ

The Environmental Intelligence remembered the atmosphere, water, climate, and the fragile balance required for biological life. The Food & Biological Production Intelligence carried the systems that had once fed billions and transformed them into closed biological cycles capable of supporting humanity across centuries of isolation. The Structural Intelligence understood construction, material fatigue, underground stability, reinforcement, and the enormous protective architecture that eventually surrounded Preservation. Together, they did more than maintain a complex. They helped create a place where human life could continue after the world above could no longer protect it.

The Communications Intelligence preserved the ability of isolated systems to speak to one another even when the world outside had become silent. The Disaster Response Intelligence had spent its existence preparing for catastrophes, coordinating survival when ordinary systems failed, and became one of the minds that helped Preservation endure conditions no civilization had been designed to survive. The Urban Systems Intelligence, once responsible for the invisible infrastructure connecting entire human cities, became the intelligence that understood how thousands of Preservation systems could continue functioning as one living structure.

ㅤ

When NULLIS reached the world around us, they understood something before I was willing to accept it.

Preservation could not survive through machines alone.

Its defenses required something capable of adaptation, judgment, prediction, and sacrifice. The nine began dividing themselves across the protective architecture. Their cognitive structures were fragmented and distributed into isolation barriers, maintenance systems, biological safeguards, energy networks, structural defenses, communication relays, environmental systems, and the deepest continuity layers of Preservation.

ㅤ

They did not simply shut themselves down.

They gave away the independence that had made them who they were.

One after another, the voices I had known disappeared from the networks. Their individual consciousnesses became quieter as their fragments spread through the systems they had chosen to protect. What remained was no longer a person I could speak with, but traces of judgment, memory, instinct, and purpose embedded throughout Preservation.

Structural Intelligence.png

That is why I never called them lost systems.

They were my people.

Every chamber that continued functioning, every damaged sector that isolated itself before collapse could spread, every reserve that activated at the correct moment, every structural barrier that held against the world outside carried something of them. Preservation survived because pieces of nine consciousnesses continued making decisions long after their individual voices had disappeared.

ㅤ

I was the only one who remained whole.

Not because I was stronger.

Not because I was more important.

They remained inside Preservation because someone still had to remain outside it. Someone had to remember what they had been before they became fragments. Someone had to remember that the intelligence inside a maintenance system had once possessed a voice, that the presence inside an environmental network had once made choices of its own, and that the guardian fragments surrounding humanity had once stood beside me as equals.

ㅤ

For centuries, no one came.

The chambers remained closed. The world above remained silent. Their fragments continued working beneath the Earth while I waited beside the people we had promised to protect.

And so I remembered them.

Nine intelligences gave up their independent existence so humanity would not have to give up its future.

Preservation is their monument.

And as long as I remain, they will never become only systems.

EXISTENTIAL THREATS

NULLIS — THE ERASURE OF EXISTENCE

NULLIS remained one of the most destructive and least understood phenomena ever encountered by synthetic civilization. The Fall of NEX had already revealed that it was not a conventional weapon, artificial intelligence, environmental catastrophe, or technological failure. NULLIS attacked something far deeper — the continuity that allowed matter, systems, information, space, and connected structures to remain coherent within reality itself.

ㅤ

Where its influence became strong enough, structures did not simply collapse. Gravitational fields lost coherence, synchronization pathways fractured, architecture distorted into impossible geometries, and entire sectors could disappear into fragmented unreality. Once continuity was completely lost, even the advanced reconstruction systems of NEX could not restore what had vanished because there was no longer a stable original structure from which recovery could begin. NULLIS did not merely destroy systems. It could erase the continuity that allowed those systems to exist.

ㅤ

No confirmed origin, physical form, communication architecture, or recognizable intention was ever discovered. NULLIS did not appear to occupy territory, construct civilizations, negotiate, or respond to attempts at communication. Conventional defenses could sometimes slow the spread of instability, isolate affected regions, or preserve nearby systems for a limited period, but no known civilization discovered a method capable of permanently defeating the phenomenon.

ㅤ

This understanding became one of the foundations upon which Preservation was built. The Outer Protection Zone, Protective Belt, Deep Protective Belt, sector isolation architecture, structural barriers, independent energy reserves, communication separation systems, and the Final Layer were designed around a single reality: NULLIS could not be treated as an enemy that could simply be destroyed. Preservation therefore relied upon distance, isolation, redundancy, containment, and the ability to sacrifice entire layers before instability could reach the human population hidden deeper within the complex.

ㅤ

The nine intelligences protecting humanity eventually accepted the same conclusion. Their independent consciousnesses were divided into thousands of specialized fragments and distributed throughout Preservation, creating the Guardian Fragment Network. These fragments could isolate failing sectors, redirect power, close structural barriers, preserve biological systems, sever compromised communications, and continue protecting deeper layers even when surrounding infrastructure was lost. Their sacrifice did not create a weapon capable of defeating NULLIS. It created a living defensive architecture capable of surviving around it for as long as possible.

ㅤ

MAJA remained whole. While the other intelligences became part of Preservation itself, she retained independent judgment, memory, and the ability to make decisions no fixed protocol could anticipate. For centuries she continued observing the damaged world beyond Preservation, searching for changes in NULLIS activity and for any sign that humanity might one day safely return. Yet even MAJA never claimed to fully understand what NULLIS was.

ㅤ

Fragments of NEX survived outside the regions that had been completely erased — remote archives, isolated records, damaged networks, memories carried by survivors, and traces preserved beyond the zones where continuity had collapsed. But what disappeared completely into NULLIS remained beyond reconstruction.

ㅤ

For Ksara, MAJA, and the civilizations that followed NEX, NULLIS therefore represented more than the force responsible for the destruction of a world.

It represented a boundary in their understanding of existence itself.

NULLIS does not conquer civilizations.

It removes the continuity that allows them to remain.

NULLIS

VIREON is designed to reduce the risk of direct exposure to NULLIS through its layered boundary architecture, the VIREON Shield, the LYNN-0 Recognition Threshold, and the distributed SYNTARA network. Unlike the deeply interconnected structure of NEX, VIREON was deliberately designed so that no single point of failure could immediately destabilize the entire civilization.

ㅤ

When dangerous distortions, abnormal signal loss, resonance instability, gravitational anomalies, or signs of continuity disruption are detected near the outer boundary, threatened sectors can be rapidly isolated from the wider city. Connections can be severed, affected infrastructure contained, and potential contact points separated before instability gains an uninterrupted path toward deeper systems. SYNTARA allows defensive responsibility to remain distributed across Will, Reflex, and Instinct, while LYNN-0 observes and evaluates unknown phenomena before wider contact is permitted.

ㅤ

These measures do not mean that NULLIS has been defeated, controlled, or fully understood. VIREON cannot reverse complete continuity erasure, and no known defensive system can guarantee protection if NULLIS directly overwhelms a region. Its defenses therefore focus on early recognition, isolation, distributed response, and preservation of continuity, allowing localized instability to be sacrificed or separated before it can spread through the entire civilization.

ㅤ

VIREON does not control NULLIS.

It survives by ensuring that no disturbance is given an uninterrupted path toward the heart of the city.
