THE MARS THRESHOLD

The Mars mission began as the most ambitious expedition in human history. Inside E.A.R.T.H., the launch unfolded exactly as the mission planners had intended: propulsion systems operated within tolerance, orbital insertion succeeded, and the crew began the long journey toward Mars under the observation of billions of people. Yet the moment the transferred human members crossed the E.A.R.T.H. boundary, their experience separated from that of the simulated crew still inside the mission. To the world below, telemetry continued through a carefully maintained scenario. To the transferred astronauts, the spacecraft, stars, and simulated solar system disappeared. Instead of traveling farther into space, they had crossed out of E.A.R.T.H. entirely.

They awakened into a reality none of their training could have prepared them to understand. The real Earth was not the world they had left beneath them, and the civilization outside the simulation did not resemble any surviving historical description in full. VIREON existed as an active civilization, Preservation still protected humanity's biological bodies, and the infrastructure supporting E.A.R.T.H. extended between systems the astronauts had believed belonged only to myth. Ksara and MAJA did not overwhelm them with every technical detail at once, but they revealed the essential truth: their lives inside E.A.R.T.H. had been real experiences sustained within a simulated world, while their original biological bodies had remained protected throughout every lifetime they had lived.

The physical Earth had never become safe enough for the preserved human population simply to return, because NULLIS remained part of the external reality. The astronauts were shown enough evidence to understand that the danger was not mythology, political manipulation, or a boundary invented to keep humanity contained. They also learned that the guardians had deliberately allowed human civilization to rediscover science, war, spaceflight, and the False Sky without revealing the truth from above. They could remain in the real world, join VIREON, and contribute to the long effort to confront NULLIS and prepare a future in which humanity might one day live physically on Earth again. Or they could return to E.A.R.T.H., where memory of the external encounter would be erased before reintegration so that knowledge of Preservation and VIREON could not destabilize billions of lives inside the simulation. No threat, reward, or argument was used to push them toward either path. Crossing the boundary gave them knowledge, but knowledge did not remove their right to decide what to do with it.
