THE FIRST WORLD BECOMES A MYTH

E.A.R.T.H. — 4900–4910 A.F.

Five hundred years after the first permanent activation, E.A.R.T.H. no longer felt like a constructed refuge to the civilization living inside it. The cities MAJA had prepared at the beginning had either transformed beyond recognition, disappeared beneath later development, or survived only as ancient districts whose original purpose few people still understood. Nations had risen and fallen, borders had shifted repeatedly, technologies had been lost and rebuilt, and billions of inhabitants now belonged to cultures created entirely within the world. The approximately 100 million preserved human consciousnesses still continued through hidden cycles of death, reset, conception, and rebirth, but none consciously remembered standing beneath another sky. The witnesses to the beginning had not disappeared from existence; they had disappeared from memory.

ㅤ

The surviving historical record became increasingly fragmented. Copies of MAJA's first address still existed in some regions, while elsewhere only damaged excerpts, ceremonial retellings, or later interpretations remained. Names such as Preservation, VIREON, MAJA, Ksara, and NULLIS survived far longer than the precise meanings once attached to them. Preservation was described as a physical complex in some texts and as a metaphor for humanity's survival in others; VIREON appeared alternately as a city, a civilization, a machine, or an unseen layer beyond reality. The first generations had understood these names as parts of one connected history, but five centuries later the names survived more successfully than their definitions.

ㅤ

MAJA and Ksara changed most visibly inside the stories people continued telling. Some traditions still described MAJA as the intelligence who prepared the first settlements before humanity arrived, while others remembered her as the guardian who opened a sleeping world and allowed humanity to begin again. Ksara remained present in damaged technical records as a consciousness working beyond E.A.R.T.H., yet popular traditions increasingly called her the traveler between worlds, the keeper of the lost Earth, or the one who remained outside the sky. NULLIS also shifted from documented external danger into competing interpretations: destructive intelligence, forbidden region, machine disease, or symbolic name for the catastrophe that ended the world before the world. Real people and real events were becoming myth without ever becoming entirely fictional.

ㅤ

VIREON could have ended the uncertainty immediately. Its archives still preserved the first activation, the complete founding records, the Continuity Cycle, the Fire of Memory, and the exact history of every event humanity was now struggling to reconstruct. MAJA could have entered E.A.R.T.H. and restored factual certainty within hours, but she refused to become the permanent authority deciding what civilization was required to believe about its own past. Ksara agreed that forcing every generation to inherit the founders' understanding would contradict the freedom on which E.A.R.T.H. had been built. Perfect memory outside the world did not give its guardians the right to overwrite imperfect history inside it.

ㅤ

By 4910 A.F., many cultures had begun using the term the First World for whatever they believed had existed before their present civilization. In some traditions it meant the physical Earth, in others the earliest technological age of E.A.R.T.H., and in still others the two had merged into a single lost origin populated by sleeping humans, guardians, impossible cities, and a danger called NULLIS. Archaeologists still uncovered ruins and fragments capable of supporting parts of the old story, but no surviving evidence could reconstruct the complete beginning without access to VIREON. Outside the simulation, the real Earth, Preservation, MAJA, Ksara, and NULLIS all remained exactly where history said they were. Inside E.A.R.T.H., humanity had not forgotten that there had been a world before its world — it had forgotten how to prove what that world had been.
