THE FIRST CHILDREN

E.A.R.T.H. — 4401–4480 A.F.

One year after the final activation wave, E.A.R.T.H. had already begun changing from a refuge into a civilization. The streets no longer carried the uncertainty of a population waiting to understand where it had arrived, and human institutions increasingly solved ordinary problems without requiring visible guidance from VIREON. Settlements expanded beyond the regions originally prepared by MAJA, businesses appeared and disappeared, transport networks were rewritten by demand, and local governments argued about the same practical questions that had shaped human societies long before the Fall. People still remembered Preservation, the damaged real Earth, and the reason E.A.R.T.H. had been created, but those memories no longer defined every day of their lives. The world remained artificial in origin, yet ordinary life was already becoming more immediate than the reality outside it.

ㅤ

The deepest change came with the first children born inside E.A.R.T.H. Their parents carried memories of another Earth, but the children had no such comparison: their first homes stood beneath the simulated sky, their first seasons belonged to this world, and every landscape they knew existed within the environment maintained by the Data Center. Pregnancy, childbirth, and medical examination followed normal biological development, while genetic tests always confirmed the child as belonging to the parents who had conceived and raised them. No instrument available inside E.A.R.T.H. revealed the deeper architecture beneath that continuity. For the first time, a generation was growing up for whom E.A.R.T.H. was not a refuge from another world — it was simply home.

ㅤ

That generation forced MAJA to confront a question that could not be answered through technical design. Parents could teach their children about Preservation, VIREON, NULLIS, and the real Earth, but knowledge could never reproduce the experience of having lost that world. Some children began asking why a planet they had never seen should be called home when their families, schools, friends, and memories all existed inside E.A.R.T.H. MAJA refused to shape their education around loyalty to the project or gratitude toward those who had created it. They were free to regard E.A.R.T.H. as a refuge, a limitation, a temporary world, or the only home that mattered to them. The system could preserve history, but it would not dictate what that history was required to mean.

ㅤ

During the decades that followed, those children became adults and were followed by second and third generations whose emotional connection to the old Earth became increasingly indirect. Human technology expanded from the understandable foundations MAJA had originally provided, universities developed new research, manufacturing grew, cities spread into untouched regions, and entirely new cultural identities formed around places that had never existed before the simulation. Music, language, architecture, traditions, governments, borders, and regional histories began belonging specifically to E.A.R.T.H. rather than reproducing the civilization humanity had lost. Relationships between transferred humans and simulated inhabitants also became ordinary, while no public system separated people according to their hidden technical origin. Inside E.A.R.T.H., a person's place in society was defined by the life they lived, not by the architecture from which that life had begun.

ㅤ

Through nearly eighty years of relative peace, MAJA continued receiving the same daily report from VIREON: population growth, environmental stability, Preservation integrity, Portal Fenix synchronization, infrastructure pressure, and any anomaly serious enough to cross established thresholds. Most days required no intervention, and that absence gradually became evidence that humanity had learned to live without its guardians directing it. Ksara continued working beyond the simulation while the real Earth remained threatened by NULLIS, occasionally returning to walk anonymously through cities that had grown far beyond the original plan. Meanwhile, the first human generation was growing old, and every passing year reduced the number of people who personally remembered the world before E.A.R.T.H. The first children had proven that humanity could have a future inside the simulation; the approaching deaths of their parents would soon test whether that future could continue beyond a single human lifetime.
