THE FIRST BOUNDARY

THE FIRST BOUNDARY

E.A.R.T.H. — 5180–5234 A.F.

The end of the War of Two Fires accelerated a transformation that had already begun before the conflict. Governments that had learned how close civilization had come to destroying itself increasingly redirected scientific competition toward orbital research, global observation, communication satellites, and exploration beyond the atmosphere. Rockets that had once been developed primarily for military delivery systems became vehicles for scientific instruments, crewed missions, and permanent orbital infrastructure. Humanity had rediscovered the ability to leave the surface without understanding that the sky above E.A.R.T.H. contained a boundary no earlier civilization inside the simulation had ever crossed. For the first time, human technological progress was approaching the edge of the world itself.

ㅤ

The boundary existed near the Kármán line, approximately one hundred kilometers above the surface, where the rules governing transferred human consciousness changed completely. Robotic probes, simulated astronauts, satellites, and automated spacecraft could continue operating inside the simulated environment because they remained part of E.A.R.T.H. A transferred human consciousness could not. Once such a person crossed the threshold, the connection between simulated experience and the preserved biological body was interrupted, and the consciousness was brought out of E.A.R.T.H. into the protected real-world architecture maintained by VIREON. To everyone remaining inside the simulation, however, nothing could reveal what had truly happened beyond that line.

ㅤ

The first crew to reach the threshold included both transferred humans and simulated companions, forcing MAJA and the Data Center to coordinate two realities at once. Inside E.A.R.T.H., the mission continued according to physical and operational logic, but the transferred member of the crew no longer experienced the simulated spacecraft after crossing the boundary. Communication with the mission failed by design, and the world below received evidence of an accident rather than evidence that one member had left reality itself. The simulated crew continued through the scenario according to mission conditions, while the extracted consciousness awakened beyond E.A.R.T.H. and saw the real Earth for the first time. The sky, the damaged planet, VIREON infrastructure, and the existence of a world outside the simulation immediately destroyed every assumption that had shaped the astronaut's life.

ㅤ

Ksara became the first presence capable of explaining what had happened without turning the encounter into captivity. She revealed that the astronaut's body had remained in Preservation, that E.A.R.T.H. had sustained human civilization for centuries, and that the world outside was still affected by the consequences of NULLIS. No technical details about Preservation locations, VIREON's defenses, or the deeper architecture were provided, because the purpose of the revelation was not to recruit a witness into secret infrastructure. The astronaut was instead given a choice: remain in the real world and help Ksara, MAJA, and VIREON, or return to E.A.R.T.H. with the memory of the encounter erased. The decision had to belong entirely to the person who had crossed the boundary.

ㅤ

By 5234 A.F., the first boundary crossing had become a permanent protocol for all future human spaceflight. Robotic exploration could travel indefinitely within the simulated universe, while transferred humans crossing the threshold would be extracted, informed, and offered the same fundamental choice. If they returned, E.A.R.T.H. would generate a believable mission outcome and their memory of the external world would be removed before reintegration. If they stayed, they became part of the small population living beyond the simulation without exposing its existence to those still inside. Humanity had finally reached the edge of E.A.R.T.H. — and discovered that the first true frontier was not space, but the boundary between the world they knew and the reality waiting beyond it.
