THE CITY OF THOSE WHO WERE NEVER BORN OUTSIDE
SEREN — 5265 A.F.
Seren had never been created as a laboratory for consciousness. It had grown naturally around a coastline that generations of inhabitants transformed from small settlements into one of the largest technological centers in E.A.R.T.H. Ports became industrial districts, transport corridors connected expanding neighborhoods, universities followed the growth of communication and machine systems, and eventually more than twenty million people lived across the wider metropolitan region. By the time Elian Voss disappeared from the oceanic communication platform beyond the city, Seren had become one of the most advanced urban environments of its age. What almost no one inside it knew was that most of its inhabitants had never possessed any existence outside E.A.R.T.H.
ㅤ
The demographic imbalance had never been planned. Transferred human consciousnesses continued through specific protected continuity rules, while simulated populations expanded wherever civilization required enough people to sustain families, institutions, economies, industries, and entire regions. Seren's extraordinary growth attracted generations of simulated inhabitants far faster than transferred human lineages settled there. Over centuries, the difference became enormous without producing any visible social distinction. A city had emerged in which simulated origin was ordinary rather than exceptional.
ㅤ
Inside Seren, there was no test capable of identifying that difference. Hospitals treated every patient according to the same biology, genetic tests matched children to their parents, and family records extended naturally through generations. A simulated child could possess grandparents, inherited traits, medical history, childhood memories, friendships, ambitions, and an entire social identity indistinguishable from those of a transferred human. No government registry marked one group as more real than another. E.A.R.T.H. had been built so that origin could not become a visible social category.
ㅤ
Only VIREON understood what existed beneath those lives. MAJA had watched Seren's population develop for centuries without treating its simulated majority as a failure or imbalance requiring correction. The purpose of simulated inhabitants had always been to allow civilization to grow beyond the approximately one hundred million protected human consciousnesses connected to Preservation. They were not background figures placed around humanity for appearance. They became parents, teachers, architects, workers, artists, researchers, politicians, neighbors, and entire generations through which E.A.R.T.H. developed its own history.
ㅤ
Elian Voss had been one of them. He had grown inside Seren believing the city around him represented ordinary human civilization, unaware that his entire origin belonged to the simulated layer. When independent consciousness finally emerged within him, that fact did not suddenly make the city more important than it had been before. Seren had already contained millions of lives, generations of history, and a civilization capable of shaping people long before one of its inhabitants crossed the threshold into autonomous continuity.
