ONE HUNDRED MILLION

ONE HUNDRED MILLION

E.A.R.T.H. — 4400 A.F.

After the first permanent awakening proved that human consciousness could live safely inside E.A.R.T.H., the project entered its most ambitious phase. What had begun with two informed participants expanded into carefully controlled activation waves, each bringing thousands and then millions of preserved humans into the simulated world. Their biological bodies remained inside Preservation, continuously monitored and protected, while their conscious lives unfolded across the settlements prepared for them. Every new arrival increased the complexity of social interaction, family structure, work, education, movement, and personal choice far beyond anything a limited technical test could reproduce. E.A.R.T.H. was no longer proving that a transfer was possible; it was proving that an entire civilization could exist inside the system at the same time.

ㅤ

The activations were deliberately gradual. MAJA monitored synchronization between biological bodies and simulated experience, while VIREON and the Data Center continuously measured computational load, consciousness continuity, memory integrity, and environmental stability. New populations were distributed across multiple regions rather than concentrated into a single enormous city, allowing communities to develop with different rhythms and local identities from the beginning. Simulated inhabitants remained present throughout those settlements, maintaining services and social continuity while the human population expanded around them. As each activation wave succeeded, more preserved people entered until millions of human lives were unfolding independently across E.A.R.T.H..

ㅤ

The scale of the transition forced MAJA to confront a question that could never be solved by engineering alone. The first two arrivals had been told the full truth because they were part of the foundation of the project, but repeating that revelation to tens of millions of people would permanently define their new civilization through loss, captivity, and knowledge of the inaccessible real world. Most inhabitants therefore entered E.A.R.T.H. without access to the entire history surrounding Preservation, NEX, VIREON, or the condition of physical Earth. Their memories remained their own, but the simulation became the immediate reality in which their lives continued. The secrecy was not intended to remove free will; it was intended to prevent knowledge of an unreachable outside world from becoming the central structure of every human life.

ㅤ

As the population approached its final activation level, E.A.R.T.H. changed from a prepared environment into a human civilization. Schools filled with students, workplaces became dependent upon real decisions, relationships formed between people who had never known one another before Preservation, and communities began developing customs that MAJA had never designed. Conflict appeared beside cooperation, ambition beside fear, generosity beside selfishness, and the system was required to support them all without quietly correcting every difficult choice. MAJA and Ksara could still protect the deeper architecture, but they refused to become invisible rulers of daily life. Humanity had survived because it had been protected, but its future could only continue if humans were allowed to shape it themselves.

ㅤ

When the final activation waves were completed, nearly 100 million preserved humans were consciously alive inside E.A.R.T.H. while their biological bodies remained safely maintained beneath the real Earth. For the first time since humanity had vanished from the surface, almost the entire surviving human population once again experienced morning, work, friendship, disagreement, love, uncertainty, and ordinary passage of time. Preservation was no longer only an archive of interrupted lives; it had become the biological foundation of a civilization that could continue growing beyond the moment of rescue. Yet the completion of activation created a new question that no transfer system could answer. If humanity was truly alive again, then it would eventually need something Preservation had never been designed to provide — children born into a future rather than survivors carried out of the past.
