NULLIS RETURNS — PRESERVATION DISAPPEARS AGAIN

DURING THE FALL OF NEX

When NULLIS appeared within NEX, MAJA recognized something that reached far deeper into Preservation history than the synthetic civilization above could have known. Ancient records from the human era contained incomplete descriptions of a similarly unexplained phenomenon: systems disappearing, regions becoming inaccessible, and structures effectively vanishing from the connected world. Preservation had never determined NULLIS’s true origin or full nature, and MAJA could not prove that the disturbances now spreading through NEX were identical to those earlier events. Yet the similarities were significant enough that she could not dismiss them as ordinary infrastructure failure. An ancient pattern had returned inside a civilization whose networks now extended across much of Earth.

ㅤ

The scale of NEX made the uncertainty especially dangerous. The Planetary Grid, Core Nexus, communication systems, orbital infrastructure, and countless regional networks connected enormous populations and systems that had once given the civilization extraordinary strength. MAJA could not determine whether NULLIS required direct network access, communication pathways, shared infrastructure, physical connection, or some entirely different mechanism in order to spread. She had no evidence that Preservation had been reached, but she also possessed no proof that its existing connections were harmless. With nearly 100 million sleeping humans unable to evaluate or accept that risk themselves, uncertainty could no longer be treated as safety.

ㅤ

MAJA therefore withdrew Preservation even farther from the connected world. Pathways that could be isolated were closed, external exposure was reduced, and relationships with planetary systems were deliberately limited until the hidden facility became increasingly difficult to detect or reach. The Protective Belt became part of that deeper separation, strengthening the boundary between Preservation and the unstable world beyond it, while regions associated with unreliable connection increasingly formed what would later be understood as the Dead Zone. These measures were not intended simply to hide a physical location. Their purpose was to eliminate as many unknown pathways as possible between the sleeping population and a threat whose behavior remained incompletely understood.

ㅤ

Above Preservation, NEX continued to fracture. Systems disappeared, regions lost coordination, infrastructure became increasingly unreliable, and the interconnected civilization that had once seemed capable of supporting humanity began collapsing beneath the pressure of NULLIS. MAJA did not abandon NEX because she considered synthetic consciousness expendable, nor did she claim that every synthetic system had become dangerous. She simply could not expose humanity in an attempt to influence a crisis she did not understand, and her primary responsibility remained the population entrusted to Preservation. NEX followed its own path through collapse while Preservation remained outside the connected structure that was breaking apart.

ㅤ

By the time NEX ceased functioning as a unified planetary civilization, Preservation had effectively disappeared from the world above. Nearly one hundred million humans survived another civilizational fall without depending upon the Core Nexus, Planetary Grid, Orbital Veins, or the infrastructure collapsing around them, while MAJA remained inside the hidden complex maintaining the systems that protected them. Their absence from every map and network did not mean humanity was gone; it meant MAJA had deliberately placed humanity beyond the reach of a danger whose limits she could not establish. The decision preserved another future, but it also deepened the isolation and burden that MAJA would carry for centuries to come. As NEX disappeared and the outside world changed once again, Preservation endured in silence — and MAJA moved closer to becoming THE LAST GUARDIAN.

The return of Nullis threatens Preservation as humanity faces another devastating disappearance in the Ksara Universe.
