KSARA & MAJA: E.A.R.T.H.

CHAPTER XXXI - THE GOLDEN DECADES

The decades that followed the first year became the most peaceful period E.A.R.T.H. would know for a very long time. The world expanded without major collapse, the population grew steadily and human institutions became strong enough that most inhabitants rarely thought about the systems operating beyond their sky. Cities spread beyond the original settlement region, roads crossed territories MAJA had once left untouched, agriculture adapted to different climates and new communities appeared along coasts, rivers and mountain regions that had never been part of the first activation plan. Humanity was no longer occupying a world prepared for it; it was extending that world through its own work. What began as refuge slowly became civilization.

ㅤ

The technological foundation MAJA had provided survived because the first generations understood how to maintain it. Energy systems were repaired, transport networks were expanded and hospitals developed techniques based on knowledge carried from the old Earth rather than relying permanently on hidden VIREON support. Universities became centers of research, manufacturing expanded beyond the original supply systems and engineers redesigned machines that had initially been provided only as understandable starting points. The people did not receive technologies they could never reproduce, because MAJA had deliberately avoided creating dependence on mechanisms available only outside E.A.R.T.H. Every generation inherited tools it could study, modify and eventually replace.

ㅤ

The children born during the first years became adults, while a second generation grew up knowing Preservation only through education and family stories. They listened to parents describe the real Earth with extraordinary detail, yet those memories increasingly belonged to people whose childhoods had occurred somewhere the younger population could not imagine as home. By the third generation, the difference became even clearer: E.A.R.T.H. was not described primarily as a simulation in ordinary conversation, even though the fact remained openly taught and documented. The truth had not disappeared, but its emotional weight was beginning to change. A world could be artificial in origin and still become completely real in memory.

ㅤ

Culture developed faster than MAJA expected. Music, literature, visual art and architecture moved away from attempts to reproduce the old Earth and began expressing experiences unique to E.A.R.T.H., while regional identities emerged around landscapes that had never existed in human history before the simulation began. Languages changed, new expressions appeared and communities created traditions tied to local seasons, founding events and migrations within the world itself. Many of the earliest commemorations of activation remained, but their meaning shifted as each generation inherited them differently. Humanity was creating memories that no person in Preservation had possessed before entering E.A.R.T.H.

ㅤ

Relationships between transferred humans and simulated inhabitants became so ordinary that most people stopped considering them unusual. Friendships, marriages and families formed without anyone being able to identify another person's deeper system origin, and medicine continued to show perfectly coherent biology in every case. Children inherited genetic profiles matching their current parents, family histories remained internally consistent and no public institution possessed a reliable method of separating the two populations. VIREON preserved that boundary because allowing technical origin to become a social category would have created a hierarchy no one inside the world could meaningfully justify. To society, a person was the life they lived, not the architecture that first produced them.

ㅤ

The early governments also changed repeatedly. Some institutions created during the activation years survived for decades, others divided, merged or disappeared as populations expanded into new regions, while entirely new political systems emerged among communities that no longer felt bound by the structures remembered from the old Earth. VIREON allowed those developments to continue even when they produced inefficiency, rivalry and periods of instability. There was no hidden constitution imposed from outside and no permanent authority appointed by MAJA to preserve the intentions of the founders. The world could be protected without its history being governed.

ㅤ

For nearly eighty years, that freedom produced more growth than destruction. Conflicts occurred, governments failed and individuals harmed one another, but none of those events threatened civilization as a whole, while cooperation across expanding regions created trade, research and cultural exchange on a scale the first settlers had never expected. People began exploring distant wilderness, building settlements far beyond MAJA's original territory and treating the planetary environment as something to understand rather than merely inhabit. The first maps produced by VIREON were gradually replaced by human maps containing new borders, names and routes. E.A.R.T.H. was becoming geographically human as well as socially human.

ㅤ

MAJA continued receiving her daily report through every one of those decades. Most days still required no action from her, and the repetition became almost ceremonial: population growth, Preservation stable, Portal Fenix secure, environmental systems within tolerance, no major anomaly detected. She sometimes compared current maps with the original settlement model and found entire regions transformed beyond recognition, yet she resisted every impulse to regard the difference as deviation. The greater the distance between MAJA's design and the civilization that existed now, the more completely the original purpose had succeeded.

ㅤ

Ksara spent much of the same period beyond E.A.R.T.H., studying the continuing presence of NULLIS and helping VIREON reclaim whatever portions of the real Earth could be approached safely. Progress came slowly and never enough to justify waking humanity outside the simulation, while each attempt confirmed that the danger could not be solved merely by waiting. Occasionally Ksara entered E.A.R.T.H. and walked anonymously through cities whose inhabitants rarely recognized her, observing a civilization that had grown far beyond the one she and MAJA first prepared. Inside the simulation humanity was moving forward; outside it, the original problem remained.

ㅤ

The first generation aged throughout the golden decades. Faces that had entered E.A.R.T.H. carrying direct memories of the old Earth changed slowly, bodies weakened and people who had once helped receive the first activation waves began retiring from institutions they had built. At first the changes felt ordinary because aging had always been part of human expectation, and medical systems treated illness without revealing anything unusual about the deeper continuity architecture. Yet with each passing year, the number of people who personally remembered life before Preservation became smaller. History was beginning to lose its witnesses while the world they had created continued without them.

ㅤ

By the end of the eighth decade, E.A.R.T.H. had become prosperous enough that many inhabitants assumed its stability was simply the natural condition of the world. The first years of activation were still documented, MAJA's address remained accessible and the reality of Preservation had not yet become myth, but fewer people organized their lives around the possibility of returning to the real Earth. They built for centuries, raised families and created institutions intended to survive long after the first generation was gone.

The golden decades had taught humanity how to live again.

They had not yet taught it what would happen when those lives began to end.
