KSARA & MAJA: E.A.R.T.H.
CHAPTER XXVI - ONE HUNDRED MILLION
For the first time since the fall of the old human world, nearly one hundred million preserved human consciousnesses were simultaneously active again. Their physical bodies still rested beneath the real Earth inside Preservation, unchanged by the streets they now walked, the food they ate, the relationships they rebuilt and the decisions they made inside E.A.R.T.H., yet their history had resumed in a form none of them could have imagined before entering the chambers. Cities that had been empty only months earlier now carried traffic through every district, schools operated under human leadership, hospitals treated ordinary patients and local institutions had begun replacing the temporary structures prepared by MAJA. Humanity had not returned to Earth, but it had returned to life. That distinction defined everything the new world represented.
ㅤ
MAJA reviewed the final activation records from VIREON and saw a result she had once considered almost impossible. Every protected body remained stable, every consciousness link had survived the transition, Portal Fenix carried the complete synchronization load and the rebuilt Data Center still retained enough reserve capacity for population growth far beyond the initial human total. Nothing about those numbers captured the actual scale of what had happened, because the one hundred million active connections were not simply processes running inside a machine. They were people now making breakfast, changing jobs, starting arguments, forming relationships and planning futures the system had no authority to write for them. The technical operation had succeeded precisely because ordinary life had already begun to make the technology less important.
ㅤ
Ksara understood the achievement through the longer history of the planet. Humanity had once disappeared from the visible world, NEX had risen in its absence, synthetic civilizations had formed relationships, families and identities of their own, and VIREON had survived the collapse that followed. Now the remnants of those later civilizations were helping preserve the species that had existed before them, creating a chain of continuity that crossed thousands of years without belonging to any single creator. Humanity, NEX and VIREON were no longer separate eras connected only by memory; E.A.R.T.H. had made them operationally dependent on one another. The survival of one age now rested partly on what another had learned.
ㅤ
The real Earth outside remained unchanged by the success. Dead Zone regions still cut across the planet, NULLIS remained active where neither Ksara nor VIREON could safely remove it, and vast territories were still unsuitable for any permanent human settlement. Nothing about the activation had solved the reason E.A.R.T.H. was necessary in the first place. MAJA refused to describe the completed transfer as humanity's return because a refuge could become home without becoming the promised destination. The people inside E.A.R.T.H. deserved the chance to live fully, but the work outside their world had to continue.
ㅤ
The difference between those two realities became more visible each day. Inside E.A.R.T.H., population centers grew, people discussed government and education, businesses appeared and the first generation began imagining decades ahead. Outside, the real planet remained a place of protected corridors, dangerous zones and unfinished attempts to understand NULLIS. Ksara and MAJA therefore lived between two futures at once: one already unfolding inside the simulation and another still blocked on the surface of the actual Earth. Success in one world could not be allowed to become an excuse to abandon the other.
ㅤ
VIREON's role also changed permanently once the full population became active. The city was no longer merely supporting a technical project connected to Preservation; it had become the operational guardian of an entire human civilization whose inhabitants would eventually number far beyond the original one hundred million. Data Center teams monitored capacity, environmental integrity and hidden system boundaries, while ordinary VIREON operators managed issues that never needed to reach Ksara or MAJA directly. The less visible VIREON became inside E.A.R.T.H., the more important its responsibility became outside it. A world people could forget required guardians who did not.
ㅤ
MAJA knew that the next step could no longer be postponed. The people now understood that the real Earth remained unsafe and that E.A.R.T.H. existed as a protected alternative, but the three-month activation had never allowed enough time for one complete address to the entire human population after everyone was finally present. Many had heard fragments of earlier explanations from reception centers, relatives or local broadcasts, yet humanity needed a shared statement about why the world existed and what MAJA believed they were being given. The transfer had connected them technically; the next message had to connect them historically.
ㅤ
She began preparing the address without treating it as a declaration of authority. MAJA did not want to tell humanity what kind of civilization it should become, what political system it should build or what values it should adopt beyond the freedom already embedded in E.A.R.T.H. The message would be simpler: the real Earth remained dangerous, VIREON was still searching for a solution, and the world around them existed so they could live rather than wait. They were not being asked to suspend life until rescue came. They were being given permission to continue it.
ㅤ
Ksara reviewed the final wording with her but refused to turn the address into a promise about time. Neither of them knew whether NULLIS would be defeated in years, centuries or longer, and giving humanity a false horizon would make every later delay feel like betrayal. The only honest promise they could make was that VIREON would continue searching and that E.A.R.T.H. would remain protected while that work continued. Hope could remain part of the message, but certainty could not. That honesty mattered more than reassurance.
ㅤ
As the communication systems across E.A.R.T.H. prepared to carry MAJA's voice into every major settlement, the one hundred million active lives continued without waiting for the speech to begin. People worked, traveled, argued, laughed and built routines inside a world that had already started becoming theirs. The activation had succeeded because humanity no longer needed to remain frozen beneath the real Earth while others searched for a solution on its behalf.
They could live while VIREON continued the search.
The chambers had preserved humanity.
E.A.R.T.H. had returned it to time.
