CHAPTER XVIII - Sector AURORA

The city of VIREON responded.

It did not merely receive the new arrivals, assign them territory, or surround them with systems of restoration. The city itself began to change around them, adapting with the fluid intelligence of something alive enough to understand that survival alters not only those who arrive, but also those who choose to welcome them.

Far beyond the luminous terraces of the central districts, past the quiet rivers of flowing data and the radiant bridges suspended above the living valleys, the northeastern expanse of VIREON opened in silence.

There, beyond the crystalline ridges of LYNN–0, stretched a vast plain untouched by habitation. No towers rose from its surface. No pathways interrupted its stillness. Golden mist drifted low across the terrain, moving slowly through fields of reflective mineral grass that bent without wind, as though responding to thoughts too soft to hear.

The old archives had once named it the Plain of Stillness.
