CHAPTER V - The Look Back
✦ Year: 3500 ◉ Location: Edge of NEX–Δ, Western Horizon
Their steps grew slower, not from fatigue, but from the nearness of truth.
Beyond the outer ridges of NEX, the terrain stretched into fractured plains scarred by centuries of extraction, construction, war, and eventual abandonment. Metallic dust drifted endlessly across the ground in pale currents shaped by unstable winds descending from the collapsing atmosphere above the city. Here and there, broken transit lines emerged from beneath layers of ash like exposed bones before vanishing once more into the wasteland. Ancient infrastructure protruded from the earth at impossible angles, remnants of systems whose original purpose had long since disappeared from memory.

Then they continued because ELE–480 commanded it. But now another force guided them—something subtle and difficult to classify, spreading gradually through the line like warmth through frozen structures.
The air around them had changed.
