KSARA & MAJA: E.A.R.T.H.
CHAPTER LIII - FIVE HUNDRED YEARS
Five hundred years had passed since the first permanent human consciousnesses opened their eyes inside E.A.R.T.H. The cities MAJA prepared at the beginning had either transformed beyond recognition, disappeared beneath later construction or survived only as ancient districts whose original purpose few inhabitants understood completely. Nations had risen and fallen, borders had moved repeatedly and entire technological systems had vanished before later generations rebuilt simpler alternatives from what remained. The world that began as a refuge had accumulated five centuries of its own history. For almost everyone living inside it, that history mattered more than the distant events surrounding its creation.
ㅤ
No person remained who could consciously remember entering E.A.R.T.H. during the activation. The approximately one hundred million protected human consciousnesses still continued through the hidden cycle of death, reset, waiting, conception and rebirth, but the identities that had once known Preservation were gone from waking memory. Some of those same consciousnesses had already lived several completely different lives, born into new families, cultures and regions without knowing they had once stood beneath another sky. The witnesses had not disappeared from existence; they had disappeared from memory. That difference remained visible only to VIREON.
ㅤ
Humanity inside E.A.R.T.H. had also expanded far beyond the original preserved population. Billions now lived across continents shaped by centuries of migration, conflict and reconstruction, while transferred human consciousnesses remained only one hidden part of a much larger civilization containing simulated inhabitants indistinguishable from them. No public institution could identify which person belonged to Preservation and which had originated entirely within the world. Genetics, medicine and family history continued functioning consistently for everyone. The population had become socially inseparable even though VIREON still maintained different forms of continuity beneath it.
ㅤ
The old historical record survived unevenly. Some regions preserved copies of MAJA's address almost word for word, while others possessed only excerpts reproduced from books that had themselves been copied from earlier damaged collections. References to Preservation, VIREON and NULLIS remained common enough that scholars still recognized them as elements of the founding tradition, but agreement over what those terms originally meant had weakened. Preservation was described in some texts as a physical complex beneath another Earth, in others as a metaphor for humanity's survival, while VIREON appeared alternately as a city, a machine, a civilization or an unseen layer beyond the world. The names survived more successfully than their definitions.
ㅤ
Ksara's place in history changed even more dramatically. Early records described her as an intelligence connected to the real Earth, someone who had existed before E.A.R.T.H. and continued working beyond it after humanity entered the simulation. Later interpretations transformed those accounts in different directions. Some scholars treated Ksara as a historical consciousness whose existence had been technologically documented, while other traditions described her as the traveler who crossed between worlds, the guardian who remained outside the sky or even the symbolic embodiment of the lost Earth itself. The historical Ksara had not vanished, but centuries of retelling were beginning to surround her with meanings she had never claimed.
ㅤ
MAJA became equally difficult to separate from the stories built around her. Surviving records still connected her directly to the preparation of the first settlements and to the global address following activation, yet popular traditions increasingly remembered her through simpler images: the woman who prepared the world, the last guardian of the sleeping humans or the voice that told humanity it could begin again. Some communities preserved statues, old recordings or fragments of early architecture associated with her, while others regarded those artifacts as later representations rather than evidence of a literal person. A guardian who once walked openly among the first inhabitants was slowly becoming someone later generations debated as history.
ㅤ
The Long Fracture had reduced technological capability unevenly across the planet. Several regions retained advanced industrial systems and substantial scientific knowledge, while others had fallen back toward localized agriculture, mechanical industry and communication networks far simpler than those available during the golden decades. Travel between distant societies became difficult enough that technological development no longer progressed at the same pace everywhere. Knowledge that survived in one region might disappear completely in another. Human civilization still existed, but there was no longer one technological age shared by the whole world.
ㅤ
This was exactly the kind of history for which the one-percent continuity layer had been created. Simulated inhabitants carrying selected knowledge across cycles appeared throughout the fractured world, often without realizing why certain principles seemed unusually intuitive to them. A healer might rediscover an old treatment from incomplete medical texts, an engineer might reconstruct a forgotten mechanical process or a farmer could preserve agricultural methods through generations after formal institutions disappeared. None of them carried enough memory to restore the lost civilization immediately. They kept knowledge from reaching absolute zero.
ㅤ
The effect was subtle enough that humanity never identified a hidden mechanism. Every rediscovery could be explained through talent, surviving texts, experimentation or knowledge passed informally between generations, and in most cases those explanations were partly true. The continuity carriers still had to study, experiment and persuade others like anyone else. VIREON did not place them in positions of power or guarantee that anyone would listen. Some died without ever using what they carried. The one percent protected possibility, not outcome.
ㅤ
Nara Vel had now lived outside E.A.R.T.H. for centuries. From VIREON she watched the world that produced her move so far beyond her remembered lifetime that even the geography of her former society had become difficult to recognize. The coastal city where she had once worked had changed names several times, parts of it had been abandoned and the surviving district containing her old archive institution now belonged to a culture whose people knew almost nothing about Nara Vel. Her disappearance existed only in fragmented historical records. The first conscious person born from E.A.R.T.H. had become almost as forgotten inside her world as the world had once believed her dead.
ㅤ
VIREON remembered everything.
The complete archive still contained the first activation, every version of MAJA's address, Mira Sen's testimony, Elias Varen's death, the first rebirth cycle, Nara's emergence and the precise sequence through which civilization fractured. None of that information had degraded outside E.A.R.T.H. MAJA could compare a damaged historical claim inside the world with the exact original event in seconds. Yet she continued refusing to restore lost certainty simply because VIREON possessed it. Perfect memory outside the world did not give its guardians permission to overwrite imperfect history inside it.
ㅤ
The daily report also continued.
Five centuries after activation, MAJA still received the status of Preservation, Portal Fenix, the Data Center, population growth, environmental conditions and any anomaly requiring attention. The names of nations changed, technologies rose and disappeared, languages evolved and billions of lives passed through the system, yet the report maintained the same essential purpose it had possessed during the first year. Most days ended with the same conclusion.
E.A.R.T.H. STATUS: STABLE.
ㅤ
The phrase had acquired an almost painful meaning. Stability no longer meant prosperity, unity or historical understanding. Wars had occurred, knowledge had been lost and millions of people lived in societies far less technologically capable than those their ancestors had created centuries earlier. The world was still stable because humanity continued, consciousness remained protected and civilization retained the ability to rebuild. VIREON measured continuity where the inhabitants measured success or failure.
ㅤ
Outside the simulation, NULLIS still prevented the promise of return from being fulfilled. Ksara and VIREON had reclaimed limited areas, improved containment and learned more about the systems that had survived across the real Earth, but nothing yet justified bringing humanity back into physical bodies at planetary scale. Preservation remained necessary. E.A.R.T.H. therefore continued doing what it had been created to do, even as almost everyone inside it had lost direct understanding of that purpose. The refuge had outlived the memory of needing refuge.
ㅤ
Five hundred years was long enough for a world to stop feeling created.
Mountains had names older than living kingdoms. Ruined cities were excavated by people who did not know the cultures that built them. Children learned stories about a woman named MAJA, an intelligence named Ksara and another Earth somewhere beyond the reality they could touch, yet those stories now occupied the same mental space as distant dynasties, ancient wars and half-understood civilizations from the earliest centuries.
The truth had not disappeared.
But it no longer stood alone.
Five hundred years after humanity entered E.A.R.T.H., history was becoming legend.
