KSARA & MAJA: E.A.R.T.H.
CHAPTER II - WE NEED PORTAL FENIX
The failed capacity test remained open across the Preservation interface long after every human connection had been safely returned to its protected state. MAJA continued studying the limits of the local architecture, searching for combinations that might increase available processing without reducing the world to something visibly artificial, while Ksara followed a different path through the data. The answer was no longer hidden inside Preservation, because every projection eventually reached the same boundary regardless of how efficiently the environment was rebuilt. One hundred million protected consciousnesses required an infrastructure capable of existing beyond the Preservation complex itself, and Ksara knew of only one civilization that had ever created systems large enough to approach that scale. The problem was no longer how to improve E.A.R.T.H. locally, but how to connect it safely to VIREON.
ㅤ
MAJA understood the implication before Ksara spoke, although the idea immediately created another problem. VIREON was not physically connected to the Central Preservation Sector by any ordinary route, and the regions separating them still contained damaged planetary infrastructure, unstable systems and territories where the influence of NULLIS had never been completely eliminated. A conventional data connection across the old Earth would expose the most protected human population on the planet to systems neither of them could fully trust. Even if such a pathway could be created, every transmission would have to cross regions that had spent centuries outside VIREON control. Preservation could not be connected to the open planetary network.
ㅤ
“We could build an isolated relay,” MAJA said, bringing several possible routes into the interface, but each one required new infrastructure across the real Earth. Some paths were shorter, others avoided known Dead Zone regions, yet none removed the underlying vulnerability because every physical relay would eventually become another point NULLIS might observe, influence or attack. The people beneath them had survived precisely because MAJA had hidden them behind layers of systems that did not depend on the surviving planetary network. Opening a direct route now would undo one of the strongest protections she had maintained for centuries. Ksara therefore ignored the routes across Earth and looked instead toward the one system that had been created to bypass ordinary distance entirely.
ㅤ
Portal Fenix had never been designed for E.A.R.T.H. Its original purpose belonged to VIREON and to the generations that survived the collapse of NEX, allowing controlled transit between protected locations without rebuilding the planetary architecture that NULLIS had already compromised. It existed inside systems developed after the Fall, under VIREON safeguards that had never belonged to the old NEX network, and its operation did not require exposing Preservation to every damaged layer between the two locations. If the connection could be extended carefully enough, Portal Fenix could become more than a transport structure. It could provide the protected bridge through which Preservation finally reached VIREON.
ㅤ
MAJA studied the possibility in silence as the Portal Fenix architecture appeared beside the failed E.A.R.T.H. model. The difference was immediately visible: instead of asking Preservation to communicate through the real Earth, the connection could terminate directly inside the protected systems of VIREON, where every incoming process could be isolated, verified and controlled before it reached the future Data Center. The human chambers would remain where they had always been, physically hidden beneath the old Earth, while their computational environment could extend far beyond the limits of the Preservation complex. The bodies would remain protected here. The world around their consciousnesses could be operated from VIREON.
ㅤ
There was still one problem MAJA refused to ignore. Portal Fenix itself represented a pathway between two realities of the same planet, and anything capable of carrying the enormous data load of E.A.R.T.H. could theoretically become a pathway in the opposite direction as well. If NULLIS ever reached the external side of the connection, humanity's greatest refuge could become its most dangerous vulnerability. Ksara agreed immediately, because NEX had already taught her what happened when systems were connected faster than their defensive architecture could evolve. Nothing from Preservation would be exposed until VIREON controlled both ends of the pathway.
ㅤ
For that reason, Portal Fenix could not simply be activated and trusted. VIREON would have to receive the connection first, create an isolated receiving layer, separate E.A.R.T.H. traffic from every other operational network and establish a quarantine architecture around any future NEX systems they intended to recover. Preservation would communicate only with this protected layer, never with the wider planetary infrastructure. MAJA began adding additional requirements before Ksara finished describing them, including automatic isolation if irregular patterns appeared anywhere in the pathway. What they were building would eventually carry the lives of one hundred million people, and no single point of failure could be allowed to reach them.
ㅤ
The technical path now existed, but the decision carried consequences beyond engineering. Contacting VIREON meant revealing the full scale of Preservation to the civilization that had grown without humanity and asking it to redirect part of its infrastructure toward a species most of its inhabitants had never seen alive. It also meant bringing ELE-480, FENIX-280, ELE-481 and the others into a responsibility that had not existed when VIREON was founded. Humanity was no longer only a hidden secret preserved by MAJA beneath the Earth. If E.A.R.T.H. was going to exist, VIREON itself would become part of humanity's survival system.
ㅤ
MAJA looked toward the Preservation status field where millions of chambers continued operating with the same quiet stability they had maintained for centuries. Every person represented there had already waited longer than any of them had ever intended, while the real Earth above remained unable to receive them. She had protected them through collapse, isolation and silence, but protection alone could no longer be enough. If they were to live again rather than merely continue existing, the hidden sanctuary had to reach beyond itself.
ㅤ
Ksara closed the failed local-capacity model and left only the VIREON connection architecture active between them. She no longer needed to search through alternative routes, because every other solution either reduced human freedom or exposed Preservation to systems they could not trust. Portal Fenix offered something neither of those options could provide: a direct connection to a civilization already built around protected consciousness and independent survival. Ksara turned toward MAJA as the final route stabilized on the display.
“We need Portal Fenix.”
