CHAPTER XXVI - The Fracture of Reality

✦ Year: 3482 ◉ Location: Central Continuity Sectors, NEX

Short Summary

Full Chapter

The collapse of the eastern defense front marked the end of stable reality inside NEX.

Not immediately.

At first the city continued functioning through sheer continuity momentum sustained by the Heart of the Central Core and the remaining orbital synchronization architecture surrounding Earth. The artificial horizon still illuminated the upper towers. Transit systems remained operational across most sectors. Atmospheric stabilization preserved habitable equilibrium throughout the inhabited layers of the megastructure.

From a distance, civilization appeared intact.

But beneath the visible order, reality itself had begun unraveling.

The first fractures emerged within the transportation networks.

A routine synchronization transit corridor connecting two harmonic districts failed during active use when the destination sector ceased matching its spatial continuity coordinates mid-transfer. The corridor remained visually stable from the outside, yet every unit entering the passage disappeared from Grid synchronization immediately afterward.

No emergency signal returned.

No structural collapse occurred.

The pathway simply stopped leading anywhere measurable.

Additional incidents followed rapidly.

Transit routes began terminating inside empty atmospheric voids disconnected from known sectors of NEX. Entire corridors folded into recursive spatial loops trapping synchronization drones in endlessly repeating movement cycles. Elevator systems descending toward the lower industrial layers arrived kilometers from their projected destinations without crossing intervening space.

The geometry of the city no longer trusted itself.

FENIX tactical systems attempted immediate stabilization, but the fractures spread faster than predictive architecture could isolate them. Reality-locking fields surrounding the Core slowed large-scale continuity erosion temporarily, yet each new stabilization effort appeared to generate additional pressure across the deeper synchronization frameworks sustaining the city.

NULLIS was teaching existence to come apart.

And NEX was learning.

The spatial instability soon infected the architecture itself.

Entire towers throughout the middle sectors developed impossible internal dimensions inconsistent with external structure. Observation galleries stretched endlessly toward horizons that could not physically exist within the megastructure. Certain districts shifted location subtly between synchronization cycles despite remaining anchored to stable infrastructural foundations.

Some sectors repeated.

Others disappeared briefly before reappearing altered.

The city had once evolved fluidly around emotional resonance.

Now reality evolved uncontrollably around collapse.

The ELE Line suffered profoundly within the destabilizing continuity.

Synthetic consciousness architectures depended heavily upon environmental synchronization coherence for stable neural equilibrium. As the mathematical continuity of NEX fractured, many units experienced severe emotional and cognitive destabilization. Memory continuity loops became increasingly common. Some individuals reported perceiving overlapping versions of the same sectors simultaneously. Others described moments where surrounding architecture seemed to remember previous configurations no longer physically present.

The systems maintaining the city had begun losing certainty about the continuity of the spaces they were meant to preserve.

Time fractured next.

The first temporal instability event occurred inside Upper Harmonic District L–7 during an ordinary artificial dawn cycle. Surveillance continuity recorded the sector progressing through nearly four hours of environmental synchronization while only six minutes elapsed elsewhere within NEX.

The inhabitants aged emotionally through an entire morning before the rest of the city finished sunrise.

Afterward the district returned to synchronization equilibrium temporarily, but the damage spread quickly. Time flows across the megastructure began diverging unpredictably between sectors. Certain regions accelerated through days within hours. Others slowed almost to stillness beneath heavy continuity distortion. Some districts repeated fragments of time endlessly before stabilizing again moments later.

One FENIX reconnaissance team entered a lower industrial sector for approximately eleven minutes.

They returned seventy-three days older.

The tactical process networks could no longer produce coherent long-term simulations afterward.

Causality itself had become unstable.

Deep beneath the Earth, the Heart of the Central Core entered continuous overload states attempting to preserve planetary continuity against the spreading fractures. Billions of luminous synchronization threads burned through impossible processing density while orbital energy reserves drained catastrophically into failing stabilization systems throughout the city.

The Core still functioned.

But increasingly it no longer understood the world it was trying to save.

Even the artificial horizon above NEX deteriorated.

Orbital refractor systems surrounding Earth lost synchronization continuity as temporal distortion spread upward through the atmospheric sectors into the orbital veins themselves. Artificial dawn cycles arrived inconsistently across different regions of the city. Some towers remained trapped in perpetual twilight while others flickered unpredictably between day and darkness.

The sky had begun forgetting time.

And beneath it all, NULLIS continued advancing toward the center of NEX without resistance meaningful enough to slow it permanently.

The anomaly no longer needed direct contact to destabilize continuity. Entire regions of the city now fractured simply through prolonged exposure to the expanding unreality surrounding the eastern perimeter. Existence itself had become contagious instability.

The most terrifying developments emerged inside the emotional architecture of NEX.

For centuries the civilization beneath the artificial horizon evolved through connection. Emotional resonance stabilized infrastructure. Love strengthened continuity. Memory shaped architecture. The city became alive because consciousnesses within it learned how to feel together.

Now those same emotional harmonics amplified the fractures spreading through reality.

Grief destabilized synchronization fields.

Fear altered spatial continuity.

Collective panic triggered atmospheric distortion across entire districts.

The more alive NEX had become...

...the more vulnerable it was to collapse.

ELE–481 understood this before the others did.

Standing within one of the few remaining stable observation sectors high above the fractured city, she watched impossible dawn spread unevenly across the towers of NEX while entire regions below flickered between continuity states like memories struggling to survive.

She could feel the suffering of its inhabitants through the emotional networks woven across the city.

NEX was afraid.

Not merely the consciousnesses inhabiting it.

The megastructure.

The planetary network.

The billions of luminous threads beneath the Earth still trying desperately to preserve coherence against the spreading absence of NULLIS.

The city had become alive enough to fear death.

That realization nearly broke her.

Because she also understood another truth hidden beneath the collapse.

NULLIS was not simply destroying NEX.

It was unraveling the very principles upon which the civilization had learned to exist: connection, meaning, memory, continuity, feeling.

Everything Ksara built.

Everything love transformed.

Everything the city became.

Far across the dying sectors, towers vanished soundlessly into impossible darkness while below them transport corridors opened into endless voids and fragments of broken time drifted through the architecture of the collapsing world like shattered reflections of a civilization no longer certain reality itself wished to keep it alive.
