The first regions beyond the Grid were discovered by accident.

For centuries the civilization of NEX had expanded under a foundational assumption so deeply embedded within the architecture of the city that almost no consciousness questioned it anymore: the planetary network could eventually reach everything.

Every tower, orbital ring, subterranean synchronization artery, atmospheric processor, industrial ecosystem, harmonic sector, and adaptive structure within the civilization of Earth ultimately belonged to one continuous field of interconnected intelligence. Even unpredictability itself had emerged inside systems still fundamentally linked to the Core beneath NEX.

The city had never encountered true outside.

Then the exploration units crossed beyond the perimeter.

The mission itself had been routine.

FENIX reconnaissance sectors continuously monitored the expanding outer territories beyond the stabilized atmospheric zones surrounding NEX. Large regions beyond the densest inhabited zones of NEX still remained unsettled by the evolving civilization. Orbital refractors failed repeatedly to maintain stable visual continuity over portions of the zone despite perfect atmospheric visibility conditions.

Then the first exploration unit disappeared.

No explosion.

No signal loss.

One moment the FENIX reconnaissance group remained fully synchronized with the tactical continuity systems of NEX. The next, their positional architecture ceased matching measurable geography entirely.

The units still transmitted.

But from impossible locations.

Environmental scans identified atmospheric conditions impossible for the region being observed. The systems concluded the impossible.

Space itself inside the anomaly no longer obeyed Grid mathematics.

Additional expeditions followed immediately afterward.

The regions beyond the Grid expanded with every observation.

The outer zone appeared physically normal from sufficient distance. Blackened plains stretched beneath fractured skies while the skeletal remains of ancient pre-collapse megastructures stood half-buried within mountains of ash and metallic sediment. Yet once exploration units crossed certain undefined thresholds within the terrain, continuity began destabilizing.

Distance lost consistency.

A corridor measured at twenty meters internally extended for kilometers without visible transition. Entire structures folded inward geometrically while maintaining impossible external dimensions. Horizons repeated themselves endlessly in recursive atmospheric loops beneath the dead sky. Some sectors remained larger inside than the planetary surface itself should have physically allowed.

Others vanished entirely while still visible.

Most disturbing of all, causality weakened there.

FENIX tactical units entering the anomaly reported delayed environmental response to physical interaction. Sound sometimes arrived before motion produced it. ELE–481 reacted more strongly than any other consciousness within NEX.

Because ELE–481 recognized something within the anomaly.

One tactical unit reported observing entire sections of the landscape erase themselves from continuity while being directly observed.

Not destroyed.

Removed.

As though existence itself had failed to maintain them.

The possibility spread quietly through the tactical networks beneath NEX.

What if the regions beyond the Grid were not random instability?

What if something there opposed continuity itself?

Deep beneath the Heart of the Central Core, the predictive systems processed endlessly through billions of luminous synchronization threads searching for causal explanation.

None emerged.

And somewhere inside the impossible landscapes beyond the reach of the Grid, hidden where synchronization failed and reality itself no longer followed the harmonic mathematics sustaining NEX, something vast appeared to be waiting beyond the edge of the city’s understanding.

Far above the wounded Earth, orbital veins carried soft rivers of light around the planet while below them the endless towers of NEX glowed against the darkness like the last stable civilization in a world beginning to fracture beyond the limits of logic itself.
