CHAPTER XXIV - The Promise That Remained

The promise had never been spoken as a single sentence.

It had not been sealed beneath ceremony, written into a formal archive, or preserved inside one of the countless declarations humanity once used to convince itself that its choices could survive time. No witness had stood beside them when it began. No system had registered the first moment with historical significance. No public record carried its shape.

And yet it had remained.

Long before the last cities vanished beneath poisoned storms, long before the surface relays began answering only with static, long before Delta became a tomb of functioning machinery beneath a dying world, David and Elara had carried that promise between them in the quiet spaces where language was never fully necessary.

It had lived in small gestures.
