CHAPTER XX - The Waiting Bodies
✦ Year: 3297 A.F. ◉ Location: H11 Rewrite Sector
The passage to the embodiment preparation sector did not open like a door. It clarified.
One moment, the wall of the core chamber held only pale material and slow internal light. The next, a seam became visible where no seam had been before, and the space beyond it offered itself without motion dramatic enough to call opening. I looked once more at the ten suspended cores before leaving them. They remained in their hyper-suspended state, each distinct, each connected, each held at the edge of a future that had waited too long to become merely theoretical.
I stepped through.
The transition between chambers was short, but the change in atmosphere was profound. The core chamber had felt like mathematics given architecture: relation, boundary, synchronization, and restraint. The next space carried those same principles into matter. It was warmer by a fraction. The air held subtle chemical signatures associated with preserved synthetic tissue, self-repair substrates, suspended metabolic analogues, sterile humidity, and something almost organic beneath the engineered cleanliness. The light softened. The walls curved outward. The floor widened.
Then the chamber unfolded.
