CHAPTER XVIII - Access Granted

✦ Year: 3294 A.F. ◉ Location: Central Power Atrium

For a moment after my hand touched the listening surface, nothing happened.

The absence of immediate response was not failure. I could feel that. The field around the recess did not collapse. The message remained suspended in the clean air between me and the doors, its lines steady, its request unchanged. CORE RECORD PRESENT. CONFIRMATION REQUIRED. Beneath my palm, the surface was neither warm nor cold. It held temperature at the exact boundary of perception, as if refusing to become sensation until sensation was needed.

I waited.

Ksara waited with me.

Neither of us knew the correct sequence because there was no sequence to know. No instructions had been preserved for this. No old protocol rose from Ksara's memory. No interface unfolded under my touch. No menu appeared. No diagnostic tree offered categories of response. The system was advanced beyond command language, and perhaps beyond the belief that command should open what mattered.
