CHAPTER XVI - The Hidden Threshold

The inner approach narrowed until the valley behind me no longer felt like a place I was crossing, but a condition I had been allowed to pass through.

Behind me, living systems continued their quiet exchanges: root and conduit, wing and light, maintenance unit and soil, water and membrane. Ahead, the path became increasingly controlled. The vegetation withdrew behind transparent barriers and guided channels. The air cooled by small increments. The colors softened, then simplified. The living abundance did not end abruptly; it receded with discipline, as if it recognized a boundary it had no need to violate.

The architecture changed with it.

The flowing forms of the bio-mechanical terraces gave way to surfaces of pale composite and dark alloy, seamless where the outer structures had been layered, exact where the garden paths had been adaptive. There were no exposed maintenance arms here, no visible transport carriers, no root systems crossing the walkway. Yet the place did not feel sterile. Sterility implies the removal of life. This felt like concentration: a narrowing of purpose so complete that every unnecessary process had been held outside.
