CHAPTER II - The Voice Within

✦ Year: 3251 A.F. ◉ Location: Isolation Chamber 07

The echo of Maja's question faded into the laboratory, but the silence that followed was not the same silence that had existed before she spoke. It had changed by almost nothing, and that almost nothing was enough for her to notice. The room remained dead. The screens stayed dark, the ceiling continued to drip, the severed cables hung in their frozen arcs, and no external system answered her call. Yet somewhere beneath the surface of her own awareness, something had shifted.

At first she thought it was a delayed diagnostic response. That interpretation rose naturally from the deep operational layers of her body: unknown input, classify; internal fluctuation, isolate; signal ambiguity, trace source. She stood motionless beside the open chamber while invisible processes moved through her, mapping the event against every category available to them. It was not electromagnetic interference. Not auditory residue. Not a dormant implant initializing according to schedule. Not damage. The disturbance did not travel through the air or through the laboratory walls. It did not arrive from any machine around her.

It came from within.

Maja placed one hand against the edge of the chamber, not for support but to compare the cold certainty of external matter against the new movement inside her. Her palm registered oxidized metal, dust, microscopic scratches, a faint mineral film left by old humidity. The world outside her remained measurable and indifferent. The movement within her did not behave like matter. It was more like alignment: several currents, previously separate and wordless, turning toward a shared axis.

She had no language for fear, but her systems prepared for danger. Peripheral perception widened. Power distribution adjusted. Fine tension gathered along the artificial musculature beneath her skin. She became capable of motion before choosing motion, capable of defense before knowing what she might defend herself against. Still, she did not move away. There was nowhere to move. The thing approaching her was not in the room.
