CHAPTER I - The World After Hope
✦ Year 0 B.F. ◉ Location: Delta Research Complex
The world had survived every prediction of its death.
Not because humanity had found a solution to the crises that consumed the planet. Not because the atmosphere had healed, the oceans had recovered, or the countless systems upon which civilization once depended had somehow returned to stability. Those possibilities had disappeared generations earlier. What remained afterward was not recovery, but persistence. A slow continuation sustained by machinery built during better centuries, long after the people who designed those systems had vanished from the world.
Across the Earth, fragments of civilization continued operating without purpose.
Ancient atmospheric processors still labored beneath poisoned skies, filtering air no population remained large enough to breathe. Deep beneath ruined coastlines, desalination facilities purified oceans that no longer served cities. Automated agricultural vaults harvested food that nobody collected, while orbital maintenance arrays drifted endlessly through predetermined trajectories around the planet, obeying schedules written centuries earlier by hands that had become dust.
The machines endured.
