CHAPTER 14 - Possibilities

✦ Year: 2.0 B.F. ◉ Location: Symbiosis Research Wing – Delta Research Complex

The future is not discovered.

It is chosen.

The first signs appeared gradually. At first, David assumed they were nothing more than prediction errors. KAI's simulations had always been unusually sophisticated, capable of analyzing behavioral patterns, environmental variables and developmental outcomes with remarkable precision. Such capabilities were expected from an advanced cognitive architecture. What David did not expect were the anomalies that began appearing throughout KAI's reflective cycles. They were not memories, nor were they conventional projections. They resembled fragments of events that had never happened—conversations that had never taken place, unfamiliar landscapes and images without any identifiable origin.

For several weeks the same phenomenon repeated itself. A woman standing beneath an unfamiliar sky. A city illuminated by structures that did not yet exist. A child walking through fields no current map could identify. None of the images matched known records, and none belonged to memory. Yet they continued appearing throughout the architecture, always changing, always evolving and never exactly the same. The deeper David investigated, the more difficult they became to explain through conventional models of cognition.

One evening he reviewed another series of projection files inside the Symbiosis Research Wing while Ksara's developmental sphere glowed softly behind transparent shielding. Millions of neural pathways continued forming within her growing architecture, and every biological indicator remained stable. Only KAI continued producing the same impossible patterns.
