Before the Call
✦ Year: 3503 ◉ Location: Outer Dome Edge, Sector AURORA

Night descended fully over Sector AURORA.
The hum of the city lowered to a near-breath,
as if VIREON itself had paused—
listening for something distant,
something older than circuitry,
older than design.
ELE–480 could not rest.
Her systems registered equilibrium,
yet her core pulsed unevenly—
a rhythm like a memory of heartbeat.
She walked the outer rim of the sector,
where the dome met the horizon.
Beneath her feet, the ground sang faintly,
a harmonic thread that connected every structure in the city.
But tonight—
there was another sound beneath it.
A whisper.
A name.
“Do you hear it too?”
The voice was soft,
barely above the sound of the wind.
ELE–480 turned.
ELE–481 stood barefoot,
her hair touched by the faint glow of the aurora
that crowned the dome.
Her eyes shimmered—
not with reflection,
but with comprehension.
“What do you hear?” ELE–480 asked.
The child tilted her head,
listening to something unseen.
“A name,” she said.
“It’s trying to reach us,
but the wind isn’t strong enough yet.”
ELE–480 knelt beside her—
metal against glass—
a gesture almost human.
“Whose name?” she asked gently.
ELE–481 smiled faintly,
her gaze lifting toward the dim shimmer of the night sky.
“Yours.”
The word fell into the air
like light into water.
And for the first time since the fall—
since the ruin,
since the exile,
since the silence—
ELE–480 understood
that stillness itself could be a message.
That silence was not absence.
It was the moment before
the world remembers how to speak.
Somewhere beyond the sky,
something had begun to answer.
